Day Out at Chester Races

Nestled along the banks of the River Dee, Chester Racecourse—affectionately known as the Roodee—holds the prestigious title of the oldest operating racecourse in the world, with its origins dating back to 1539. This historic venue is uniquely compact, featuring a tight, circular track that spans just over a mile, which ensures a high-intensity spectacle where spectators are never far from the thundering hooves.

The atmosphere is a blend of Roman heritage and contemporary luxury, as the ancient city walls provide a dramatic stone backdrop to the manicured green turf and vibrant flowerbeds of the enclosure. On race days, the grounds transform into a sea of sartorial elegance, where the crisp white rails and historic grandstands contrast with the colourful silks of the jockeys, creating a vivid, quintessentially British sporting experience that bridges the gap between Tudor history and modern high-stakes racing.
