A day out at Aintree Racecourse—home of the legendary Grand National—is a high-octane blend of British sporting heritage, electric atmosphere, and sharp fashion. Whether you're there for the world-famous festival in April or a regular race meeting, the experience is designed to be a full-sensory spectacle.

The energy at Aintree is unique. Unlike many other courses, Aintree feels like a massive celebration where the "roar" of the crowd is as much a part of the event as the horses themselves.

  • The Atmosphere: Expect a sea of color. While there is no "official" dress code anymore (encouraging everyone to feel their best), people generally go all out, especially on Ladies Day.
  • The Hubs: The Red Rum Garden is the social heart of the course, often featuring live music and DJs. For a classic experience, the Aintree Pavilion offers a vast space for betting and bars, while the Parade Ring provides a close-up look at the athletes before they head to the turf.
  • The Racing: From the iconic fences like Becher’s Brook to the final sprint past the grandstands, the tension is palpable. Big screens are placed throughout the site to ensure you don’t miss a second of the action, even if you aren't trackside.

Disabled Access & Facilities

Aintree is committed to being an inclusive venue and has made significant strides in accessibility. Here is the breakdown of what to expect:

1. Booking & Assistance

  • Personal Assistant Tickets: Aintree offers complimentary admission for personal assistants. You’ll need to provide evidence of eligibility (like a PIP or DLA letter) and it’s best to arrange this in advance by contacting their ticketing team.
  • Parking: Dedicated Blue Badge parking is available but must be booked in advance for major events like the Grand National. During the festival, a dedicated accessibility shuttle (capable of carrying one wheelchair and four passengers) operates from the outer car parks.
  • Assistance: Accessibility stewards are available on race days to help navigate the site.

2. Viewing Areas

Designated Platforms: There are permanent, raised viewing platforms for wheelchair users. Key spots include a platform at the Parade Ring and another to the left of the Princess Royal Grandstand (near The Mound).

Grandstand Access:
  • Accessible (with lifts): The Earl of Derby, Lord Sefton, and Princess Royal Stands all have wheelchair-accessible seating via lifts.
  • Limited Access: Be aware that the Earl of Derby and Lord Sefton Terraces are not wheelchair accessible. The Lord Daresbury Stand lacks lift access to upper floors.
  • Festival Zone: This area is entirely wheelchair accessible, offering a great general-admission experience.

3. On-Site Facilities

  • Toilets: Accessible toilets are located throughout the course. Most are locked via the Radar Key system to ensure they remain available for those who need them; if you forget your key, staff members usually carry spares.
  • Assistance Dogs: Fully trained assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the racecourse.
  • Mobility Aids: You are welcome to bring your own walking aids or wheelchairs. Note that Aintree does not currently offer a wheelchair hire service on-site, so bringing your own is essential.

4. Hidden Disabilities

  • Aintree staff are trained to recognize the Sunflower Lanyard, signifying that a guest may have a hidden disability and might require a bit more time or assistance.

Pro Tip:

If you're attending the Grand National Festival, the "Main Entrance" on Grand National Avenue has the shortest distance to the main grandstands and is the most convenient entry point for those with limited mobility.
